Derek's musical journey began with piano and violin, later 'cello, before discovering percussion aged 11. He studied at JRAM before reading music at Selwyn College, Cambridge. He learned drum kit from Bob Armstrong, and jazz vibraphone with Roger Beaujolais and Anthony Kerr. He has worked as a freelance performer, teacher and arranger/composer.
Derek's performance experience spans an array of musical genres, encompassing jazz, funk, salsa and folk. His career highlights include appearances on Top of the Pops and Children in Need. He plays in the Weaver Ensemble, which in 2023 performed at the Valetta Baroque Festival and in Shrewsbury for the 350th anniversary of the eponymous John Weaver's birth.
As well as performing, Derek teaches in individual and workshop settings. He regularly accompanies students for exams and recitals. Recent arranging commissions include a major transcription (from full orchestra to piano) of Graham Fitkin's recorder concerto, for the RAM.
